Getting an Argonne e-mail address
If you are an Argonne employee or have an active appointment within the laboratory, you can get a mailbox on the Argonne Exchange server. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to request one.
Argonne employees and those with appointments can manage their @anl.gov address via http://www.anl.gov/alias. You can forward it to your Argonne Exchange mailbox, or to an external address.
If you wish to access MCS's research infrastructure, access is requested/managed via the MCS Accounts Pages. If you have an account on that system, you must provide an address to forward mail from your email@example.com alias. MCS does not provide mailboxes, only e-mail forwarding.
Reading your mail
You can read your mail using any mail reader that supports encrypted POP/IMAP connections. IMAP is the recommended protocol. You can send mail via encrypted SMTP as well.
You can also read your mail from a web browser by visiting http://outlook.com/owa/anl.gov.
- Your login name is your e-mail address. Typically, this is your Argonne firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Your password is your Argonne domain password

We're running a caldav proxy to access Exchange services. It's currently proxying IMAP and CalDav protocols.
- IMAPs: davmail.mcs.anl.gov port 993
- CalDav: davmail.mcs.anl.gov port 443.
Simply book the equipment on your calendar, then stop by the Help Desk prior to the appointment time to pick it up. If you need it for an extended period, be sure to book it for the entire time it will be unavailable to others. Make sure you specify availability as "busy" or else others will see it as available.

We request as much advance notice as possible. If you request it too late, you may get saddled with something ill-equipped to meet your needs or chance nothing being available.
Loaner laptops are required to travel to sensitive countries.
I just got an attachment. Should I open it?
Most likely, no. We have a golden rule here dealing with attachments, and it is vitally important that you follow these instructions. Here's the mantra you should memorize and repeat when you get an attachment:
This is very important. It really doesn't matter who it's from. Most, if not all, malicious mail with virii, worms and trojans are never from who they claim to be from. The address is almost always forged. So just because someone down the hall, or your boss, or your spouse, or anyone sends you an attachment, it does not mean it's safe. Always ask yourself: "Do I know what this is? Do I know what will happen when I open it? Did I expect this to arrive?" If any one of the answers is "no", then you'd best confirm with the sender before opening.
It simply takes a quick email saying "Did you send me this? What is it?" to the original sender to confirm you should have it. If it's from someone you don't know, we strongly recommend not opening it if you can avoid it, even if the sender confirms sending it. It could be a trojan. Make sure you have a valid reason for opening it.
Never open a file that ends with .exe, .scr, .pif, .cmd, .vbs, or .bat. It's never good. Anything else, treat with much skepticism.
Keep your antivirus scanner up to date. See this page for info on antivirus scanners. These rules apply to any email account you use. If your machine uses our network, you are required to do your best to keep it from being infected. And please, be careful of what you open.
Finally, if you suspect you are infected, let us know as soon as possible. If you want to forward a suspicious email to us, make sure you send us the full headers. In pine, you do this by pressing "H" while on the message, then "F" to forward. In Apple Mail, click "Message" in the menu bar, then "Forward as attachment".
If you do open an attachment and nothing appears to happen, that's a very bad sign. Let us know right away.
We don't mean to harp on this, but it's necessary for us to do so. We have, in the past, rescued machines for people who have opened such attachments as "NakedWife.exe", "AnnaKournikova.vbs", etc. Common sense dictates this is not something you should open on a computer, especially one in a .gov address space. However, it's happened. So, please, be careful.
This entry primarily refers to windows, but handling attachments with caution regardless of operating system is always a good idea.

The best method to forward Spam to the Ironport Appliance administrators (email@example.com) is as an attachment. You can do this via the Outlook web interface. Click "Actions" and choose "Forward as Attachment". In Apple Mail, you can do this by clicking Message in the menu bar, and choosing "Forward as Attachment".
