AD short course at USNCCM Jul/21/2013

The presentation slides by Narayanan and Utke can be downloaded below

The hands-on part of the short course use preinstalled AD tools and examples on virtual machines provided via the following two options.

  • Option A: locally running virtual box image (exported as an "appliance") AD_VirtualBoxVM.ova file size: 2661339648, MD5 (AD_VirtualBoxVM.ova) = f5e369381dc4090971e9585cdc460544
    • import appliance into your virtual box
    • check if virtual box has host-only network interface enabled
    • start up the image (from the virtualBox Manager)
    • if error message about USB support pops up: disable USB in the image settings if you don't have the virtual box extensions installed
    • in GRUB menu: hit enter to select the first kernel version
    • after it is booted:
      • login to terminal as "tutorial" , password "wengert65"; this provides an ASCII only terminal, to enable X11 (if you have an X11 server running on the host system) follow the steps below:
      • invoke:
         /sbin/ifconfig

      • look for "eth1" and "inet addr" on the next line such as
        eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:1d:b4:20
                  inet addr:192.168.56.101 ....

      • on the host using the address given under "eth1" do
         ssh -X tutorial@<paste IP address here>

    • ready to go
  • Option B: connecting to a virtual machine running on the hotel cloud on Futuregrid - will be available only during the short course.
    • at the workshop we will provide a list if IP addresses to the running VM instances on the hotel cloud
    • using on of the addresses:
ssh -XC tutorial@<paste IP address here>

    • ready to go
