Printers

We are in the process of installing a new print server and enabling the large copiers as network printers and scanners. In the interim, the following instructions should work for you.

Printing to MCS printers from Windows requires you to be on a registered wired host or on the VPN.

A list of available printers is available at http://ntprint.mcs.anl.gov/printers.

To add the printer you wish to use, use the Add printer link in the Control Panel's Printers and Faxes section.

Click Next, choose to add a network printer and click Next, click the Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network and for the URL use: http://ntprint.mcs.anl.gov/printers/FOO/.printer where FOO is the name of the printer. The names to use can be found at the above URL.

X Windows

You want to run the X Windows server from Cygwin. First, you must run the Setup program.

Note: You must have Administrator privileges to install Cygwin.

Press Next	Select "Install From Internet" and press "Next"	Use the defaults, press "Next"	I use the above, but the default is fine. Click "Next"
Direct Connect is probably what you want. Click "Next".	Choose a mirror. I like the one above. Click "Next"

Click the '+' next to X11 at the bottom of the list, then scroll to xorg-x11-base, and click the arrow-circle icon such that it either says "Keep" or a version number. (If a version number, make sure it's higher than the number on the left.)

You can install any other packages that you would like, but for purposes of this document, we're focusing on X11. It will automatically install any required packages. I've expanded the above window so you can better see the list.

Press "Next" to download and install the packages.

When the download is complete, make a shortcut of c:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat and launch that when you need to run X Applications. When you're done with X Windows, simply close the xterm that the above script opened.
