Pine can talk to the new Zimbra server quite simply. We'll make this the default on the MCS Linux Desktop builds soon, but here's how to set it up right away.

These instructions assume your version of Pine is capable of speaking to SSL servers -- the version installed on MCS linux desktops is.

Configuration

  • From the pine Main Menu (hit M to see it if you're in a message list), type S for Setup.
  • Type C for config.
  • Using your arrow keys, select smtp-server and type C to change the value. Use smtp.mcs.anl.gov.
  • Scroll to inbox-path and type C to change the value. Use zimbra.anl.gov/ssl/user=username-mcs and press return. When asked for the Folder on Zimbra to use for your inbox, press enter to select the default [inbox].
  • If you'd like to keep a copy of sent mail on the server, scroll to default-fcc and type C, change it to {zimbra.anl.gov/ssl/user=username-mcs}Sent.
  • Type E to exit, typing Y to commit changes when asked.
  • Type S to re-enter Setup, and this time choose L to edit collectionLists.
  • Type A to add a new collection.
  • Nickname is MCS Mail
  • Server is zimbra.anl.gov/ssl/user=username-mcs
  • Type Control-X to save and exit.
  • Type E to exist the collectionLists menu.

At this point, you can exit pine to start fresh from a known state. Now, when asked to login, your username is your e-mail username@zimbra.division.anl.gov, and your password is your Argonne Domain password.
